FORT MYERS, Fla. – For the first time in program history the FGCU Beach Volleyball team is ranked in the top 20 thanks in part to not one but two seniors that have been making up for lost time in 2021 with each chasing history as they climb up the team’s all-time wins list together. When building a successful program you couldn’t hand pick a better duo to serve as pillars than Kayla Whetstone and Giovanna Borgiotti.“They set the standard. They play with such, at such a high level, with such high intensity. Nothing rattles them they are in these giant moments and just very even keel, very ‘hey we know we have to get done. Let’s make it happen,” FGCU Beach Volleyball Head Coach Chris Sweat said.Making it happen might as well be their trade mark. So I’m kind of cheating if we are being honest,” FGCU Beach Volleyball senior Giovanna Borgiotti said. Either way that’s the wrong stat to pay attention to in their eyes.“At the end of the day it is all about the team wins and not our individual wins,” Whetstone said.Making the number 20 next to FGCU the most important number this season.“To be ranked nationally I think it just goes to show the growth that we have had in the program,” Whetstone said.“I don’t think that it ends with just being nationally ranked I think that we can keep continuing to move up,” Borgiotti said. And that’s the legacy they want to leave, this year is only the beginning and as far as that eventual wins record goes they have no problem seeing it passed on to the younger players on the team.“I’ll have my year of glory and then I think that it is up from there and they are going to have so many more wins in the future,” Borgiotti said.“I honestly hope that everybody passes my record. I would love that because that would mean our program is growing in the right direction,” Whetstone said. Kayla and Giovanni are expected to pass the all-time wins mark sometime in April.
