first_imgChief Executive Officer of the Windward Islands Volcanoes Cricket Team, Mr. Gregory Shillingford has localized the impact of the recent victory of the Windward Islands Volcanoes Cricket Team.The Windward Islands Volcanoes Cricket team emerged Champions of the regional “Super Fifty” Cricket tournament when they beat the then defending Champions, the Barbados Pride at the Coolidge Cricket Grounds in Antigua on Saturday February 24th 2018.According to Mr. Shillingford during a press conference of the Dominica Cricket Association in recognition of the sterling performance of the Windward Islands Volcanoes on Thursday 1 March 2018, the Volcanoes’ weekend triumph over the Barbados Pride Cricket team in the regional Super Fifty Championship game in Antigua last weekend can serve as a healing balm for the people of Dominica, just as it slowly recovers from the ravages of Hurricane Maria last September.Shillingford said of the win, “It is life a gift to the people of Dominica who, suffered and had losses as a result of the hurricane; to really lift their spirits at a time when you have catastrophes and stress and trauma”.He congratulated the team for the great feat of winning seven of its last seven matches, following a poor start to the tournament. The Windward Islands Volcanoes loss the first three of its games but was able to bounce back to win seven consecutive games to include the championship trophy.Meanwhile, the Windward Islands Volcanoes Team has been assured of continued sponsorship support from two local entities. The Discover Dominica Authority (DDA) represented by Mrs. Samantha Doctrove Letang and Kamila Ondrackova of Range Developments both expressed their agencies pleasure at the success of the Cricket team this year and pledged their continued sponsorship support in the future.Range Developments presented the team with a cheque of ten thousand US dollars keeping with their commitment to the team.Scores in that final Championship Match were; Barbados Pride 232/9 in their fifty overs. Jonathan 80; Royston Chase 44 in 57 deliveries. Bowling for the Volcanoes, Larry Edwards was the pick of the wicket taker with his 2/41 and Captain Shane Shillingford 2/44.In their turn at the crease the Volcanoes got off to a flying start reaching 44 before the first wicket. They were pegged back in the middle overs with some excellent bowling by the Pride bowlers. However the Volcanoes batsmen held their nerves and inched to victory with young debutant Alick Athanaze from Dominica hitting the winning runs to see the Volcanoes over the finished line to win by three wickets. The Volcanoes scored card read thus; Roland Cato 54, Kyle Myers 32.
