West Florida Jumps to No. 16 in Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Poll

first_img TUCSON, Ariz. – After a 4-0 start to the 2011 season, the West Florida baseball team jumped five spots to No. 16 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II national poll released on Monday.  The Argonauts earned the school’s highest national ranking according to Collegiate Baseball Newspaper since 2007, when the team was ranked No. 15 on March 12.UWF outscored its opponents 45-11 through its first four games, earning doubleheader sweeps over Montevallo and then-ranked No. 29 Rollins.  On the pitching side, the Argonauts had scoreless performances from three starting pitchers, highlighted by a one-hit, seven-inning gem by senior Jason Postill (Orlando, Fla./Tallahassee CC) in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader at Rollins.On offense, the Argos hit .406 for the week with 17 extra-base hits.  Senior right fielder Greg Pron (Daphne, Ala./Daphne HS) and junior first baseman Kenny Stalls (Jacksonville, Fla./Central Florida CC) each hit over .600 for the week, and Stalls hit home runs in both of the season’s first games.Defending national champion and No. 1 ranked Southern Indiana has not yet played in 2011, and No. 2 UC San Diego held onto its spot after starting the year 3-1.  No. 6 Florida Southern (3-0) is the top-ranked team in the region, while No. 13 Southern Arkansas (0-0) holds the Gulf South Conference’s top ranking.The Argos will put their undefeated record to the test with four home games this week, including a 4 p.m. matinee against NAIA rival Spring Hill on Wednesday, Feb. 9.  UWF will then host Flagler this weekend in a three-game series starting on Saturday, Feb. 12.  Fans can follow the action with live audio and live stats for all four games online at www.GoArgos.com.
