Ready For Women Who Speak Their Mind In an exclusive conversation with indianexpresscom Pankaj talks about the challenges he faced while shooting Rangoon and also mentions that Kangana Ranaut is the perfect Julia Pankaj felt that she brings a rare combination of strength and vulnerability on screen He also explains at length about the approach he follows while shooting on a remote island in difficult weather conditions the experience of working with three actors and more Below are the excerpts from the interview: Rangoon’s cinematography We spent about three months before finalising Arunachal Pradesh as the location Vishal and I finally decided on Arunachal because it had a certain look that suited the mood of the film Rangoon belongs to a particular period The film has a backdrop of World War II So the film has two very stark looks One is that of cold desaturated the very strong look of the wartime era and another is that of the colourful and vibrant Bombay from that time We have used very bright and bold colours for shooting Bombay sequences and stark colours for northeast sequences We have used the colour palette that was used in old films Shooting references for the film We looked at a lot of pictures from the same era as that of the film We took a look at INA (Indian National Army) British soldiers and northeast in that era Those pictures were our references for shooting war sequences But Rangoon is essentially a romantic musical with war as a mere backdrop Is Rangoon influenced by Casablanca No the visual style of Rangoon is not influenced by Casablanca Approach to shoot the intense scenes between Shahid and Kangana We kept the camera free floating because that’s very organic and is also the unspoken way in which Vishal and I work It helps to capture actors in an organic way We first rehearse the scene with actors then Vishal allows me to freely move the camera around the actors I am always responding to actors and their movements That’s how we worked in Haider as well One of the most intense sequences between Kangana and Shahid happens to be in a swamp It was one of the most exciting scenes to shoot In this scene Julia is drunk and she and Nawab (played by Shahid) are having a jolly good time That’s also the point after which things start to become intense The camera flows around Shahid and Kangana with a rhythm My idea is to move along actors and respond to their movements In a certain way that does become intense when you are moving the camera freely instead of using a ‘static’ camera What was it like to work with Shahid Saif and Kangana I was familiar with Shahid since we have worked in Haider before We had a great time while working in Rangoon as well We knew each other very well I was working with both Saif and Kangana for the first time and found both of them amazing I had a lovely time while shooting with all these actors Saif is very charming That’s what I discovered about him He is the non-stop talker and keeps everyone entertained which is very important when you are shooting a film that can get as tensed as Rangoon You need some jolly person to be around and Saif is extremely jolly Kangana was extremely dedicated She came fully prepared on the sets She had a lot of questions which is a good thing One of the most intense sequences between Kangana and Shahid happens to be in a swamp It was one of the most exciting scenes to shoot Do you think Kangana can overshadow Saif and Shahid in the film As far as Kangana overshadowing these two actors is concerned well; the film is written with Kangana as the protagonist in the mind She does have a bigger role than both of them I wouldn’t be surprised if she overshadows both Saif Ali Khan and Shahid Kapoor in the film Do you find her intimidating as an actor I have never felt that kind of vibe from Kangana at all Maybe people feel that way because she is so dedicated to her work A lot of times she is in her own world preparing for her role All three actors have been very sweet Is there truth to Kangana and Shahid’s cold war The rumours have gone out of proportion There was one occasion when there was a creative argument between two actors but it got sorted out very quickly Though I can’t comment on the argument itself it was all fine WATCH VIDEO | Consider Myself Lucky To Have Worked With Saif Shahid In ‘Rangoon’: Kangana involved in his character has his own creative inputs It’s a joy to see that Actors who are aloof to their roles or characters are bad actors And there are enough aloof actors I don’t have specific names to mention But there are many bad actors All the good actors that I have worked with are completely invested in their characters They have their own points as to how to portray a character on screen They always have a very healthy discussion and involvement on the sets For all the latest Entertainment News download Indian Express App IE Online Media Services Pvt Ltd More Top NewsWritten by Suanshu Khurana | Published: January 20 2017 7:51 am Kaabil – completely misguided album that can be given a miss Top News The music of the Rakesh Roshan-produced Kaabil is a classic example of over-production When that merges with a lack of melody what emerges is not worth much It’s been a while since composer Rajesh Roshan gave us music of the calibre of Julie (1975) one of his finest outings There have been spurts of populist but mediocre music from him in films such as Koi… Mil Gaya (2003) and Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai (2000) But Kaabil after a three-year-hiatus (his last outing was Krrish 3) is definitely not a worthy comeback Watch What Else Is Making News The only time the album comes alive is for the remix version of his iconic piece Dil kya kare from Julie It’s not the best remix we’ve heard but the groove that’s added through the drumbeats and piano interludes make it work Jubin Nautiyal has an extremely nasal and flat voice and fails to have any impact in any song that he’s attempted in the album The prickly part is that he has sung five of the six songs Reworked by Gourov-Roshin Dil kya kare works only because we know the melody well and it takes one down memory lane Saara zamaana haseeno ka deewana is a combination of the 80s melody with Raftaar’s rap and overworked electronica Sung by Payal Dev whose voice sounds extremely synthetic the track is likely to warm the dance floors for its tempo This one however is definitely better-produced than the former piece from Julie The opening song the title track is from the typical verse-chorus 90s Bollywood world Roshan tries to bring in classical Spanish touches here and there with the fast-paced riffs on the guitar but the song a saccharine overload is a four-minute monotonous mess The album also comes with a sad version of the track which for the lack of a better word is just sad Nautiyal’s voice which is off-key in so many places becomes absolutely intolerable in this one Kuch din attempts to be a soft romantic melody but fails to strike any chord It moves with guitars and synths in a tedious fashion and sounds as if it has been drained of all vocal and rhythmic intensity Mon amour has the talented Vishal Dadlani at the helm and all the zing in the song is his gift to us It’s also one of the only pieces in the album that is orchestrated well The Spanish guitar and trumpet pieces are layered nicely with Dadlani’s voice The problem however is the ordinariness of the composition itself After one long drag of a music playing session of Sanjay Gupta’s Hrithik Roshan and Yami Gautam-starrer Kaabil we are left with just one thought — we go through music as terrible as this so that you don’t have to A completely misguided album that can be given a miss For all the latest Additional Commissioner of Police South region to hold a meeting with members of the Shia community to prevent children from inflicting injuries upon themselves during the Muharram procession A division bench of Justice R M Savant and Justice S S Jadhav was hearing a suo motu petition based on a PIL filed by activist Faisal Banaraswala seeking a ban on participation of children in the ritual The petition contends that the use of sharp weapons such as knives blades and swords to inflict cuts on the back and head is a violation of fundamental rights Muharram marks the anniversary of the battle of Karbala in which Imam Hussain the grandson of Prophet Muhammad and his family were killed To mourn his killing participants including children hit themselves with sharp objects This year Muharram will be observed on October 1 The court pointed out that a division bench which was earlier hearing the matter had asked the community leaders to decide the matter In the earlier hearings lawyers who appeared for Shia bodies had filed interventions stating they have been performing the rituals in such a manner since 1300 years and that nobody has been “injured” The court however passed directions for the police to hold a dialogue with religious leaders to address the issue as it concerned the safety of children The court has also directed the police to watch the processions and videograph them In the last hearing in December 2016 the court had asked for the implementation of a 2014 circular issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) stating that the police will be taking all preventive measures to ensure that followers of the Shia sect do not inflict injuries on themselves Justice Savant said “It is a serious issue concerning the safety of children We direct the Additional Commissioner of the South region Pravin Padwal to convene a meeting with the members of the Shia community and organisers of the procession to take steps to ensure children are not harmed or injured in the process” The court had asked the police to file a reply after the meeting in the next hearing The court also said that it will decide the matter before the Muharram procession this year Habib Nasser one of the intervenors who represents the Shia community said “We are a peace-loving community We will sit with the additional commissioner and speak about the traditions that we have been following for a thousand years Muharram should be commemorated in the same manner We haven’t faced any fatality and nobody has been forced to flagellate himself We are not above the law but the PIL was filed to pressurise us to stop the religious rituals that has not caused any harm or fatality” The PIL was filed by Faisal Banarasiwalla against children inflicting injuries on themselves using blades and knives during Muharram procession The Shia community said the PIL by a Sunni community representative is motivated which led to a ruckus between the two communities in the court Following this the court turned the PIL into a suo motu petition since it involved the safety of children For all the latest Mumbai News download Indian Express App More Related News emphasising
